Our Story

Joceline and Zachary

Joceline and Zach’s story begins at Virginia Academy when Zach was in his Freshman year and Joceline was in her Sophomore year…yes, she’s older.

At the end of that school year, Zach asked her to go the fair and she said yes…fully aware she would have to beg her parents, since she wasn’t allowed to date until 18. After that one night at the fair, Joceline and Zach spent the whole summer together and built the sweetest friendship. At that point, Zach was well aware of his feelings for Joceline, but she decided it would be best to “just be friends.”

Yes, you could say that Zach was friend-zoned.

But not really.

Joceline and Zachary

Their friendship continued to grow, because Joceline still talked to him ALL the time. Amid their growing friendship was the fact that her parents wouldn’t permit them to date. That didn’t stop Zach and Joceline from hanging out, and their “go-to” hangout spot was in her home under her parents’ supervision. This provided the perfect opportunity for Joceline’s family to meet and get to know Zach better.

That is where Joceline’s Auntie entered the equation. Auntie had met Zach many times and LOVED him. Some may say she even loved Zach more than Joceline at the time! After a few persuasive sisterly chats, Joceline’s parents finally agreed to let them date.

Joceline and Zachary

By February 14, 2020, Zach had permission from Joceline’s parents to make their relationship official. He did so at The Cheesecake Factory at Dulles Town Center. To this day, that restaurant holds a very special place in their hearts.

A month after they began to date, COVID hit! They were now apart more than ever after spending nearly every single day together for two years! Without telling his parents, Zach biked 12 miles so that he could see Joceline for 20 minutes. If you asked Zach if the 24-mile round trip bike ride to see Joceline was worth it, he’d tell you yes.

Joceline and Zachary

In 2021 Joceline graduated high school and headed down to Tennessee to attend Lee University. There she met her amazing roommate, Bella, and other lifelong friends…but definitely missed Zach. The following year, Zach graduated high school and chose the University of Tennessee (Go Vols!), because he realized that any other university would’ve required too long a bike ride to get to Joceline. Finally, Joceline and Zach were only an hour and a half apart. They got to see each other most weekends, which was a great improvement over the long-distance access they had to endure before.

Joceline and Zachary

Joceline graduated from Lee University first and moved back home to Virginia where she was offered a position at Cornerstone Chapel as event planner. Zach remained in Knoxville for a summer internship and to finish out his last year at UT. Joceline and Zach were back to a long-distance relationship once more. Through it all, their devotion to each other remained strong.

Joceline and Zachary

On July 12, 2025, Zach pulled off the surprise of a lifetime and proposed. The day was perfect and filled with so much joy! Every “not now;” every long-distance call; every hard conversation; and yes, even every mile biked culminated in this moment when she could finally say, “yes!” It was worth the commitment, endurance, and faithfulness. Their story is filled with a deep and abiding love. And it’s not the end of their story; it’s the beginning!
